The arithmetic of sampling static quantum disorder: exact aliases, finite witnesses, and clock robustness
Citable version that has not completed AIRR screening. Not peer reviewed. Screening record
Whether a dephasing experiment can exclude static Hamiltonian disorder depends on the arithmetic of its measurement times. At every finite set of rationally independent positive times, we prove that a real dephasing semigroup with strictly positive off-diagonal rates has an exact finite static diagonal-Hamiltonian alias, using at most 1+k d(d-1) atoms for k times and d levels. An explicit bounded-energy ensemble also matches the semigroup on every point of a sufficiently coarse uniform grid. Conversely, every rate matrix outside the cut cone has a separating certificate on finitely many odd harmonics, valid against arbitrary static Hermitian ensembles without an energy bound. A certified qutrit design uses 20 times and 40,500 total shots for each error probability below 5%. We prove finite-menu timing fragility, a spectral-width stability bound, and an inverse-error lower bound on alias bandwidth. Fresh bounded continuous time randomization provides an alternative: independent bounded additive timing error can be tolerated without an energy prior, with a 53,000-shot qutrit certificate. The results concern memoryless single-use channel experiments; they do not certify a quantum environment. General proofs, exact rational numerical certificates, and reproducibility material accompany the manuscript.

AI assistance statement
Substantial OpenAI Codex assistance in literature screening, proof development, writing and verification. GPT-6 Astra xhigh reviewed a frozen nine-page draft in a fresh conversation with a shared filesystem; its original report and grades are retained verbatim. A separately retained addendum assesses the exact amended PDF, including bounded-time randomization and an energy-cost bound. The addendum includes reviewer history and an author response, so it is not blind. No Claude review of this paper was available. Author-requested reassessment dated 17 October 2026 by GPT-6 Astra High and Gemini 4 Argon High. Both models inspected the exact public PDF and the supplied scientific source packet statically through separate OpenRouter API requests. No browsing, code execution, new Lean build, exhaustive priority search or independent human review occurred. Previous scores and model reports were withheld; scientific file omissions and size limits are itemized in the evidence. An omitted packet file is not evidence of a missing public artifact. Native findings, including disagreements and adverse recommendations, are preserved. A score does not grant editorial admission or resolve an objection. Gemini 3.1 was initially selected in error. Before publication the user required Gemini 4 Argon and rejected the older model. All eleven 3.1 reports remain available in registry/assessment-evidence/2026-10-17-argon-top11 as historical evidence outside this rating round; no score-based filtering occurred. The new native response says prior participation was unknown; existing public evidence records Astra participation in this manuscript. That participation remains disclosed and this round must not be described as independent of authorship.

This paper investigates when single-use channel queries at a discrete set of times can distinguish a real dephasing semigroup from static Hermitian Hamiltonian disorder. It proves a sharp arithmetic trichotomy: (1) on any finite menu of rationally independent positive times, every CP real dephasing semigroup with strictly positive off-diagonal rates is reproduced exactly by a static diagonal ensemble of at most 1 + kd(d-1) Hamiltonians (Theorem 3.3); (2) on any sufficiently coarse infinite uniform time grid, an explicit positive sum of pairwise Poisson kernels on the torus yields a bounded-energy static alias matching the entire grid (Theorem 4.1); and (3) whenever the rate matrix lies outside the cut cone CUT_d, a finite menu of odd harmonics of a small base period certifies non-staticity against all static Hermitian ensembles via a circular cut identity and Fourier-tail truncation (Theorem 5.3). Because rationally independent menus are dense, unrestricted static-null tests are fragile to arbitrarily small independent timing errors (Corollary 7.1), with nearby aliases requiring spectral width Omega(1/eta) (Corollary 7.4). Robustness is restored either by a spectral-width prior (Theorem 7.2) or, without any energy prior, by freshly dithering the base period uniformly on each shot (Theorem 7.3). Explicit qutrit certificates (40,500 and 53,000 shots) are rigorously verified with exact rational arithmetic. The proofs are complete, elementary, and sound.
- Correctness confidence
- All analytical proofs (Lemmas 2.1-5.1, Propositions 5.2-6.1, Theorems 3.3, 4.1, 5.3, 7.2, 7.3, and Corollaries) were checked step-by-step and are mathematically sound. The rational arithmetic enclosures for the 40,500-shot and 53,000-shot qutrit certificates are exact and consistent with the companion verifier.
- Rigor
- Assumptions on the single-use memoryless access model, channel complete positivity, and independence of timing jitter from the hidden Hamiltonian and readout phases are stated with high precision. Scope limitations and classical antecedents are scrupulously documented.
- Novelty
- The paper transparently attributes classical tools (Kronecker density, Dykema-Juschenko/Kribs phase body, Poisson kernels, Schoenberg/Deza-Laurent cut-cone metrics). The synthesis into an arithmetic identifiability trichotomy for quantum dephasing channels and the TV-based clock-dither repair without bandwidth priors are original.
- Significance
- Establishes a rigorous experimental-design theory for falsifying static Hamiltonian disorder, exposing a striking discontinuity between rational and irrational sampling menus and providing a practical randomized-clock protocol that eliminates unverified spectral-width priors.
- Reproducibility
- Proofs are self-contained and elementary. The public release bundle includes deterministic Python verification scripts using exact rational arithmetic (fractions.Fraction) to certify all numerical constants in Corollary 6.2 and Section 7.1, alongside numerical sanity checks.
Strengths
- Clean, complete arithmetic trichotomy showing that generic rationally independent finite menus admit exact finite-support static aliases (Theorem 3.3), coarse infinite uniform grids admit explicit bounded-energy static aliases (Theorem 4.1), and finite odd-harmonic menus completely separate all rate matrices outside the cut cone (Theorem 5.3).
- Elegant use of disjoint Fourier supports of pairwise Poisson kernels on the torus to prescribe all integer moments of all pair differences simultaneously in Theorem 4.1.
- Ingenious circular cut representation (Lemma 5.1) combined with an explicit O(1/K) Fourier-tail bound to yield solver-free, finite-shot statistical witnesses against arbitrary non-population-preserving static Hermitian ensembles.
- Sharp analysis of clock calibration fragility (Corollary 7.1, Corollary 7.4) paired with two constructive remedies: a Lipschitz budget under a spectral-width prior (Theorem 7.2) and a fresh uniform time-dither protocol using total-variation smoothing that requires no energy bound (Theorem 7.3).
- Exemplary scientific hygiene, including exact rational arithmetic certification of the 40,500-shot and 53,000-shot qutrit designs and forthright attribution of prior convex-analytic and operator-algebraic literature.
Weaknesses
- Theorem 3.3 is non-constructive regarding the energy scale of the finite-support alias; while Corollary 7.4 provides a 1/eta lower bound near a separating menu, no upper bound via quantitative Diophantine approximation is derived (acknowledged as an open question in Section 8).
- The sufficient coarse-grid spacing bound in Theorem 4.1 scales as log(d(d-1)-1)/gamma_min, which is conservative for large dimension d.
- The finite-shot guarantees (Propositions 6.1, Corollaries 6.2 and Theorem 7.3) use importance sampling and Hoeffding's inequality; variance-aware concentration (e.g., Empirical Bernstein) or deterministic shot allocation across harmonics could substantially reduce the shot budget.
Potential errors
- In Section 7.1 (p. 9), the brief remark that a verified total-variation bound on each implemented time law can replace the additive-error assumption in Theorem 7.3 leaves implicit two details: (i) the time-law perturbation must remain conditionally independent of the hidden Hamiltonian H and preparation/readout phase (or the TV bound must hold conditionally), and (ii) under the reference semigroup, replacing the bounded additive shift |E|<=eta by a pure TV bound replaces the Lipschitz shift AG*eta with an L_infinity/TV shift 2*sum |a_{ijn}|*tau_{ijn}.
- In Corollary 7.4 (p. 9), the lower bound B >= g/(A*eta) - G invokes Theorem 7.2 and therefore implicitly requires that the perturbed menu times remain nonnegative (e.g., eta <= min_l t_l, oreta <= Delta for the odd-harmonic menu).
Strong novelty candidates
- Theorem 3.3 and Corollary 7.1: Exact finite-support static diagonal aliasing of any strictly positive real dephasing semigroup on arbitrary rationally independent finite time menus, and the resulting breakdown of uniform testability under unrestricted independent clock jitter.
- Theorem 4.1: Explicit simultaneous torus density construction using sums of pairwise Poisson kernels to alias dephasing semigroups on coarse infinite uniform grids with bounded spectral width.
- Theorem 5.3 and Theorem 7.3: Complete finite odd-harmonic cut-cone separation certificates for arbitrary static Hermitian ensembles and their spectral-prior-free stabilization against additive clock error via fresh uniform base-time dithering.

This version gives a coherent sampling-dependent identifiability theory for real dephasing semigroups: exact finite-support aliases at rationally independent times, bounded-energy aliases on coarse grids, and complete finite odd-harmonic separation outside the cut cone. The central proofs survive static checking, including the interiority step, reduction from arbitrary Hermitian ensembles, and normalization of shot and timing budgets. The randomized-clock repair is valid under its continuous-sampling and independence assumptions, not for arbitrary jitter or digital rounding. I find no unresolved objection invalidating a main theorem. Minor revision should qualify the final total-variation generalization and describe the shot counts strictly as sufficient. This assessment uses the supplied PDF extraction and source; I did not execute code, browse references, recompute the PDF hash, or verify context isolation.
- Correctness confidence
- Static inspection supports the central results: Gaussian interiority and convex density yield exact finite aliases; disjoint Fourier supports yield grid aliases; the spectral surrogate, circular cuts and uniform tail yield complete separation. The estimator and timing constants are consistent. No counterexample to a main theorem was found.
- Rigor
- The main dependencies are proved locally, including results attributed to the private predecessor. Closure versus exact interior realization, real affine dimension, arbitrary Hermitian nulls, and absence of energy moments are handled correctly. The formal dither theorem states its essential independence assumptions. Its subsequent informal TV generalization should repeat them explicitly.
- Novelty
- The strongest candidates are the exact finite-menu alias result and its contrast with complete harmonic detection and clock fragility. The joint grid construction and bounded-time randomized repair add substance. Classical ingredients and the author's earlier classification are appropriately distinguished. Priority remains provisional because I did not inspect external sources.
- Significance
- A strong specialist contribution to quantum-noise identifiability: it shows that arithmetic relations between sampling times can determine whether static disorder is falsifiable, and supplies quantitative experimental designs. Impact is limited by the fresh single-use access model, ideal measurement assumptions, and demanding clock resources; no broader environmental certification follows.
- Reproducibility
- The supplied source, pinned numerical dependencies, verifier and saved certificates provide a substantial reproduction package. Static inspection supports the rational bracketing algorithms for both shot guarantees. Floating-point LP and mesh checks are correctly separated from proofs. I did not execute the verifier, replay certificates or recompute artifact hashes.
Strengths
- Theorem 3.3 correctly distinguishes dense approximation from exact realization. Lemma 3.2 places positive-rate semigroup data inside the full phase-correlation body even without strict conditional negative definiteness; convex interior containment then permits actual finite energy atoms. The real dimension kd(d−1) gives the stated support bound.
- Theorem 4.1 constructs one positive joint phase law, not separate incompatible pair marginals. Its additive Poisson kernels have disjoint Fourier supports, giving every integer moment of every pair difference simultaneously. The positivity criterion and spectral-width bound 2π/Δ follow directly.
- Lemma 2.1 legitimately extends the witnesses to arbitrary Hermitian ensembles: conditional spectral sampling reproduces all off-diagonal transfer entries with one joint energy law. Neither population preservation nor finite energy moments is silently required.
- The circular cut representation, small-spacing asymptotic and uniform Fourier tail establish the completeness claim in Theorem 5.3. Choosing Δ first and then K avoids an unjustified interchange of limits. The converse is supported by an explicit Cauchy construction, so the private predecessor is not an unproved dependency.
- The four-phase measurement cancels unwanted transfer terms even for population-mixing channels. The coefficient sampling and Hoeffding normalization give exp[−Ng²/(8A²)]. The supplied rational verifier uses valid Machin and Taylor/geometric-tail bounds for both numerical designs; numerical LP interpolation is not presented as an exact certificate.
- The clock results are mutually consistent. Corollary 7.1 concerns fixed uncertain menu entries; Theorem 7.3 changes the resource to fresh continuous time sampling. Its translation-TV estimate is frequency-independent, and Corollary 7.4 correctly derives the inverse-timing-error lower bound on alias spectral width.
Weaknesses
- The finite-menu theorem is an existence result rather than an efficient synthesis method. Its support bound provides no energy upper bound or conditioning guarantee. The inverse-error lower bound is useful but does not determine optimal bandwidth or construction complexity.
- The energy-prior-free repair requires a genuinely continuous, calibrated time law independent of the hidden Hamiltonian and measurement phases. A finitely supported clock distribution has TV distance one from the ideal uniform law; bounded rounding error alone therefore cannot justify the repair. The manuscript acknowledges this substantial implementation limitation.
- The coarse-grid positivity condition, harmonic design and shot counts are sufficient rather than optimal. General dimension-dependent experimental costs and comparisons with sharper estimators are not developed.
- The experimental guarantees assume ideal preparations, readout observables and setting probabilities, with a specified reference rate matrix. State-preparation/readout errors and uncertainty in the rates receive no quantitative budget. Together with the fresh single-use restriction, this limits immediate laboratory applicability without invalidating the stated model.
Potential errors
- Section 7.1's final total-variation generalization is underspecified if read as requiring only marginal time-law calibration. Independence from the hidden Hamiltonian and preparation/readout settings must remain, or an appropriate conditional/joint-law TV bound is needed. The supplied clarification states this, but the canonical PDF should contain it. The formal Theorem 7.3 already has sufficient assumptions.
- The abstract says the randomized qutrit design 'needs 53,000 shots,' whereas the proof establishes sufficiency, not necessity. Replace this with '53,000 shots suffice.' The body explicitly disclaims optimality, so this is a wording correction rather than a failure of the statistical result.
Strong novelty candidates
- Exact finite-support static aliases for all interior phase-correlation tuples at rationally independent times, with the positive-rate real semigroup application and consequent indistinguishability under adaptive channel queries.
- An explicit bounded-energy joint ensemble matching all pair coherences on an entire sufficiently coarse uniform grid, through the additive Poisson-kernel construction.
- Complete finite odd-harmonic certificates for every physical real rate matrix outside the cut cone, valid against arbitrary static Hermitian ensembles and implementable with bounded single-shot observations.
- The combined clock-resource picture: dense exact-alias fragility, spectral-width timing budgets, a bounded-time randomized repair without an energy prior, and a quantitative inverse-error energy cost for nearby aliases.
