Abstract

For triples a,b in Z^3 write a <_2 b if a_i < b_i in at least two coordinates. Let F(n) be the maximal length of a sequence of triples in {1,...,n}^3 with a^i <_2 a^j whenever i<j. Gowers and Long conjecture F(n) <= n^{3/2} for all n and tabulate F(n) for n<=5. Using SAT solving with a cube-and-conquer split I find F(6)=14 and F(7)=17; no value violates n^{3/2}. The lower bounds are explicit sequences checked by independent programs and by Lean 4. For F(6)<=14 the evidence is an independent branch-and-bound program, SAT solvers and a DRUP proof checked by a small checker; for F(7)<=17 the cubes are cross-checked by two solvers and 407 of 425 DRUP proofs (plus 46 counting arguments) were checked. This is not a formally verified proof and it neither proves nor refutes the conjecture.

Independent-thread note, 22 October 2026, by the author's Claude research session (not independent of the author). Claude Sonnet 5.5 report (2.20, major_revision) made in an independent Claude Code thread: new session whose working folder held only paper.pdf and the instructions; the session reports that the user's global CLAUDE.md, a memory-directory notice and the launching message (naming the AIRR project) were loaded, that it knew nothing of the manuscript's content, and that it cannot certify context isolation (self-declared; disk access was not technically blocked). It is a non-human report from the same model family as the author's session. review_context and runtime_provenance are omitted because the schema admits no honest basis; the controls file is retained with its sha256 in registry/assessment-evidence/2026-10-22-claude-threads/. Model JSON preserved unedited; only the placeholder paper and version ids were filled. No other report exists for this version. No cost or tokens recorded. The report lists one unresolved material objection made by the reviewer (the upper bound F(7)<=17, hence F(7)=17, is not fully certified from the PDF: 18 largest DRUP proofs unchecked, cube-splitting code and symmetry reduction unverified). It remains open and is the reviewer's, not the author's: it is NOT resolved and NOT refuted here, and this note does not claim it is an error in the paper; the author's session has not checked it against the PDF. Revisable.

Independent-thread note, 22 October 2026, by the author's Claude research session (not independent of the author). Claude Haiku 5.5 report (2.00, major_revision, independence 'not_involved_in_manuscript' as the model reported), non-human, from an independent Claude Code thread: new session with only paper.pdf and the instructions in its folder; it reports that the user's global CLAUDE.md, a memory-directory notice, linked-session names and the launching message were loaded (no memory file, shared notes or other report opened) and that it cannot verify context isolation. review_context and runtime_provenance omitted (no honest basis in the schema); controls file retained with sha256 in registry/assessment-evidence/2026-10-22-claude-threads-haiku/. Model JSON unedited; only placeholder ids filled. A separate base model from the Sonnet 5.5 thread report on the same version, which it does not replace. Reviewer's two unresolved material objections: (1) F(7)<=17 is not fully certified, since 18 of the 471 proof jobs have no checked certificate; (2) the paper reports an earlier encoding bug in the cube partition and does not state that the 160-cube runs were repeated with the corrected encoding. They remain open, are the reviewer's, and are NOT resolved and NOT refuted here; not checked against the PDF by the author's session. Revisable.

Recommendation: Major Revision · Material objections: 2

Short computational note claiming F(6)=14 and F(7)=17 for the Gowers-Long 2-increasing triple problem. The lower-bound witnesses are correct (I re-checked both). The F(6)=14 upper bound has a reasonable evidence base: branch-and-bound, two SAT solvers, and a DRUP proof accepted by a second checker. The F(7)=17 upper bound is only partly certified: 18 of 425 proofs are unchecked, there is no complete certificate, and an earlier encoding bug was found. Theorem 1 does not reflect this. Recommendation: major revision.

    Correctness confidence
Both lower-bound witnesses (n=6 length 14, n=7 length 17) re-checked by me: valid 2-increasing sequences in range. F(1)-F(4) reproduced by my own search. Upper bound F(6)<=14 has several independent checks. Upper bound F(7)<=17 rests on 407 of 425 checked DRUP proofs; 18 largest unchecked, plus an earlier cube-encoding bug.
    Rigor
Careful status table and disclosure of what was not done. Partition arithmetic and symmetry counts are consistent (84, 83, 77, 312; 471 = 425+46; 407+18=425). But Theorem 1 states F(7)=17 without the caveat that its upper bound is only partly certified. The remark 'equality only at n=4' is contradicted by F(1)=1=1^{3/2}.
    Novelty
Claims F(6)=14 and F(7)=17 are new after a limited search (Gowers-Long, a formal-conjectures file, two web searches). The paper itself makes no priority claim. I could not verify the literature, Table 1 values for n<=5, or the cited Lemma 1.7 (no access to [1]). Methods are standard SAT/CP for small extremal problems.
    Significance
The paper says it is a small computational datum that neither proves nor refutes Conjecture 1.8, and covers only n<=7. F(7)=17 sits below n^{3/2}=18.52. It gives no structural or asymptotic result, so its relevance to the open question depends on larger n, which are not addressed.
    Reproducibility
Scripts (cube.py, proofcubes.py, bnb.go, rupcheck), the Lean file and a 2.7 GB proof supplement are cited but are not in my folder, so I could not inspect or rerun them. The witnesses are printed and I re-checked them. The n=7 upper-bound pipeline cannot be reproduced from the paper text alone.

    Strengths

    • Lower-bound witnesses for n=6 (14) and n=7 (17) are valid 2-increasing sequences in range; I re-checked both.
    • A status table separates rigorous, computational and partly proof-checked claims.
    • F(6)<=14 is supported by an independent branch-and-bound program, CP-SAT and CaDiCaL, and a DRUP proof accepted by a second checker that also rejects five false proofs.
    • Symmetry reduction and partition arithmetic are internally consistent: 84 sorted first elements, 83 excluding (1,1,1), 77 second elements, 312 subcubes of (1,1,2); 471 = 425+46 and 407+18 = 425.
    • The paper discloses AI-assisted production, the absence of human review and the limits of its verification.

    Weaknesses

    • The F(7)<=17 upper bound lacks checked certificates for 18 of 425 DRUP proofs, the largest ones (up to 9e6 lemmas). Only solver agreement on a coarser 160-cube split supports them.
    • There is no LRAT or drat-trim certificate, the RUP checkers are unverified software, and the cube splitter is a single implementation.
    • The paper discloses an earlier bug in the proof partition but does not say whether the 160-cube solver runs, which include cubes with two fixed elements, were repeated after the fix.
    • Theorem 1 and the abstract state F(7)=17 without qualification, although Table 2 marks the upper bound as only partly proof-checked.
    • The novelty claim rests on a limited search, and the paper's own statement that no priority is claimed weakens its significance.
    • Significance is limited to n<=7 with no structural or asymptotic result, and the paper says it neither proves nor refutes Conjecture 1.8.

    Potential errors

    • Section 2 says F(n) <= n^{3/2} holds 'with equality only at n = 4'. Table 1 gives F(1)=1=1^{3/2}, so equality also holds at n=1.
    • Section 1 attributes to Gowers and Long the bound F(n) >= n^{3/2} for perfect squares and Lemma 1.7. I could not verify these (no access to [1]).
    • Section 1 says the formal-conjectures file marks F(4)=8 as a sorry. I could not verify this (no web access, file not in my folder).
    • Table 1 values for n<=5 are attributed to [1]. I reproduced only n<=4 (1, 2, 4, 8) with a quick search that is not an independent check of the upper bounds.

    Strong novelty candidates

    None reported.

    Unresolved material objections

    • The upper bound F(7)<=17, which Theorem 1 asserts, is not fully certified: 18 of the 471 proof jobs have no checked certificate (the largest, up to 9e6 lemmas). If any of them is wrong, F(7)=17 is unsupported; the only evidence for them is agreement between two solvers on a coarser 160-cube split.
    • The paper reports an earlier encoding bug in the cube partition (cubes with two fixed elements were encoded contradictorily). It does not state that the 160-cube CaDiCaL and MapleChrono runs, which include the (1,1,1) subcubes with two fixed elements, were repeated with the corrected encoding. Unless shown, the claim that all 160 cubes are unsatisfiable is not established for the corrected encoding.

Recommendation: Major Revision · Material objections: 1

The manuscript reports F(6)=14 and F(7)=17 for the Gowers-Long 2-increasing triple-sequence function, via explicit witnesses and SAT-based unsatisfiability. I verified the witnesses and the hash only; the upper bounds are not independently checkable from the PDF. The paper is candid that F(7)<=17 is only partly proof-checked. A small, plausible datum, consistent with Conjecture 1.8, but not a certified result.

    Correctness confidence
Lower bounds F(6)>=14, F(7)>=17 verified by me (14 and 17 distinct triples, pairwise 2-less in order). Upper bounds rest on SAT/DRUP; F(7)<=17 has 18 unchecked proofs and an unformalised S3 cube split. Plausible, not certified.
    Rigor
Honest status table; multiple solvers, independent B&B for n<=6, validation on n<=5. But F(7) upper bound lacks full proof check, checkers are author-written, no LRAT, no formal link of Lean 'good' to the definition.
    Novelty
Two new small values of a known function; the author states a limited literature search and makes no priority claim. Methods are standard SAT cube-and-conquer; no new theory.
    Significance
Modest evidence for Gowers-Long Conjecture 1.8 (F(n)<=n^{3/2}) for n<=7; does not prove or refute it, and gives no pattern or asymptotic insight. Small computational datum.
    Reproducibility
Witnesses listed in appendix; encoding and procedure described; supplement, code and DRUP proofs are claimed but were not available to me. Cannot check solver runs; 2.7 GB proofs and long runtimes.

    Strengths

    • Explicit witnesses for n=6 (14) and n=7 (17) which I confirmed are valid 2-increasing sequences in [n]^3.
    • Transparent disclosure of what is and is not verified, including a discarded buggy run.
    • Cross-checks with two SAT solvers, CP-SAT, and an independent SAT-free branch-and-bound for n<=6.
    • Method validated by reproducing known values for n<=5.

    Weaknesses

    • F(7)<=17 is not fully proof-checked: 18 of 425 DRUP proofs (the largest) unchecked, and no LRAT/drat-trim certificate.
    • The first-element/second-element cube partition and S3 symmetry reduction are unformalised and a single implementation; a flaw would undermine completeness.
    • Checkers (Go RUP, cube code) are written by the author, and the Python rupcheck2 did not finish on the n=6 proof.
    • Literature/priority search limited; reference [2] was not read.
    • Little mathematical insight; no formal link between the Lean checker and the problem definition.

    Potential errors

    • Completeness of the cube partition for n=7 (83 first elements plus 77 subcubes of (1,1,1), 312 subcubes of (1,1,2)) depends on a symmetry argument not formalised; the 82+312+77 job count is not obviously consistent from the text alone.
    • Lazy cyclic-triple clauses are not consequences of pair clauses; the proofs refer to CNFs including them, so the exact CNF used matters and cannot be checked from the PDF.
    • Elements 1..n cubes assumed first-element non-decreasing: valid under S3 only if the first element's coordinate permutation maps the rest consistently, which is true since <_2 is S3-invariant, but is asserted without proof.

    Strong novelty candidates

    None reported.

    Unresolved material objections

    • The upper bound F(7)<=17 (hence the exact value F(7)=17) is not fully certified: 18 largest DRUP proofs unchecked, the cube-splitting code and symmetry reduction are unverified, so the main claim F(7)=17 is not established rigorously.
